                                   Life without Television

Introduction      When my familys only television set went to the repair shop the other

day, my parents, my sister, and I thought we would have a terrible week.

How could we get through the long evenings in such a quiet house? What

would it be like without all the shows to keep us company? We soon

realized, though, that living without television for a while was a stroke of

good fortune. It became easy for each of us to enjoy some activities alone,

to complete some postponed chores, and to spend rewarding time with each

                  other and friends.

Body            First of all, with no television to compete for our time, we found

plenty of hours for personal interests. We all read more that week than we

had read during the six months before. We also enjoyed some hobbies we

had ignored for ages. My sister and I played tennis on weekends and my

parents went to the theater. Secondly we spent time with each other.

Instead of being in the same room together while we stared at a screen, we

actually talked for many pleasant hours. Moreover, for the first time in

years my family played some games together. We played cards and got a

lot of fun. And because we didnt have to worry about missing this or that

show, we had some family friends over a couple of evenings and spent an

                  enjoyable time with them.

Conclusion       Once our television set returned, we were not prepared to put it in the

attic. But we had a sense of how it can take over our lives if we are not

careful. We are now more selective. We turn on the set for our favorite

shows, certain sports events, and the news, but we dont leave it running all

night. As a result we find we can enjoy television and still have time left

over for other activities and interests.

The Joys of an Old Car

Introduction       Some of my friends cant believe my car still runs. Others laugh when

they see it parked outside the house and ask if its an antique. But they are

not fair to my fourteen-year-old Honda Civic. In fact, my "antique" has

opened my eyes to the rewards of owning an old car.

One obvious reward is economy. Fourteen years ago, when my

husband and I were newly married and nearly broke. We bought the car for

a mere $1 800. Today it would cost five times as much. We save money on

insurance, since its no longer worthwhile for us to have collision

coverage. And it still delivers twenty-six miles per gallon in the city and

thirty-eight on the highway--not bad for a senior citizen:

Body             Besides, there is the advantage of familiarity. When I open the door

and slide into the drivers seat, I feel comfortable. I know to the millimeter

exactly how much room I have when I turn a corner or back into a

streetside parking space. When my gas gauge is on empty, I know that 1.3

gallons are still in reserve and I can plan accordingly. The front wheels

invariably begin to shake when I go more than fifty-five miles an hour,

reminding me that I am exceeding the speed limit. With the Civic, the only

surprises I face are the ones from other drivers.

Conclusion        I prize my fourteen-year-old Civics economy and dependability, and

most of all, its familiarity. It is faded, predictable, and comfortable, like a

well-worn pair of jeans. And, like a well-worn pair of jeans, it will be

                  difficult to throw away.
